ODBG 0013 - how to turn half-pipe Skiing and Snowboarding into a board game
When a board game designer watches the Winter Olympics what are you to do? :) Think of how could this be a board game.
Now, is Half pipe Skiing and Snow boarding Art? I would argue yes as your pulling moves and stunts with each jump. So… Where to begin.
What types of feelings need to be evoked?
Time sensitive pressure. Being able to train and get better. Rewarded for taking risks. Having multiple attempts.
So how to achieve it?
Maybe stacking dice in sets when you're doing tricks and it's against the clock.
The dice could be of different sizes so that some tricks are easier (but lower scoring than others)
In the training phase completing tricks of different complexities give you dice to add to your repertoire (pool) do you risk getting more dice or do you you play it safe and get fewer dice?
There is also a reward for speed in this game especially when training as the faster you are (aka the sooner you complete your trick) the higher your height you can jump. This results in you getting more time to do your tricks when you do your final runs.
But if your dice tower falls it means you fall because you overdid your trick. It only has to stay up for a few seconds after your trick.
On each run at each jump perhaps you're almost playing Yatzee as you're going down the run in terms of finding sets and combernations. But you lose dice/height/speed when you make errors and have to reroll. If you haven't finished stacking your dice when the timer goes off you lose one.
At the start of each round you select a trick you're Attempting. This would be a card with a pattern on. The minimum you have to do is complete that trick if you do more you gain extra benefits.
Overall you can get different types of tricks dice whilst you're training and it culminates in you doing the best run that you can do. At the end.
When doing your final runs the size of tricks you do at the start determine your speed down the half-pipe taking your dice away as you gradually get slower. It means you can start with your best trick (attempting it at least) but as you gradually fail tricks or run out of time you get a lower score for your run down the track.
