ODGB 0022 - Seers Catalog Board game review.

What is Seers Catalog board game?

It is a quick, competitive card playing game where players are trying to strategize playing all the cards from their hand whilst trying to keep a high card in it at the end of the round to score points. You're two main strategies are either to make other players lose points early or plan with a little card awareness different sets and runs to control the game.

Good things about the Seers Catalog board game?

Artifacts make it highly replayable - the standard game without Artifacts share similarities with other playing card games where you're trying to get rid of cards from your hands. It is the Artifacts that flip this game into a more strategic one with unique abilities which give players huge variety to the game leaving lots to explore in different set ups.

Mean game - In this case mean is a good thing. Its the competitive nature to tactically plan which players to focus your efforts against which can be difficult. You're almost trying to read other players so that you can plan for how they're going to act.

Fast paced - The starting complexity isn't too high, therefore the speed of playing rounds is fast as player turns aren't dragged down too often by analysis paralysis. Plus when players are deciding what to do all other players have the same time and information to plan their turns.

Complexity can be gradually added - because the Artifacts work in different ways, Seers Catalog can have its difficulty gradually increased by adding more complex Artifacts.

Playing time - because it's done in rounds you can play as many or as few rounds as you like to kill time between bigger games or fill a short games evening.

Teach was fast - this is always a good sign of a well made and tested game as its fast for players to luck up and get started.

Bad things about Seers Catalog game?

The theme is a little weak - I know this is a great example of a game where its main focus is mechanics. But the theme being Seers Catalog just didn't stand out to me. It just didn't enhance the flavour of the game.

Complexity is too great for non card game players - if you don't play card games regularly, or grew up on them like me, the complexity of it might be too much for you and newer players. I would recommend learning games like German Whist and Gin Rummy first to get used to some of the core expanded mechanics in this game.

Summary of Seers Catalog board game.

It's really fun, something I look forward to playing again. I think it'd be something I'd happily teach and play to most members of my family and game playing friends. It's a great little thinky game with a lot of replayability and is able to be played in short or medium game sessions.

Thanks for reading.
